According to a 2002 study conducted by the University of Massachusetts, 60% of adults can’t have a ten-minute conversation without lying at least once. This problem is compounded by the fact that most people are no better than chance at detecting deception in others. Intelligent Narrative Analysis provides instruction on multiple tools, derived from academic research and years of experience, for understanding and detecting deception in others, based on their written and oral communication. This course focuses on verbal indicators of deception and the latest research on the relationship between cognitive load and deception detection. Students will review videos and written statements to practice their deception detection skills. They will also sharpen their skills in identifying personality characteristics from oral and written narratives.
